Haplogroup J2 subclade M340 downstream of P279

Recent testing at Family Tree DNA has confirmed that a very rare subclade of J2, M340 reported in Anatolia in the paper "Excavating Y-Chromosome Haplotype Strata in Anatolia" has been shown to reside downstream of an equally rare subclade P279. Both P279 and M340 reside upstream of L26 and L27, SNP's derived in many but not all M172 haplotypes.

To date only 4 cases of the P279 subclade (formerly referred to as J2a3) have been reported FTDNA as well as 2 cases from published data. King and Underhill reported M340 in a sample from region 8-Western Coastal Anatolia. Other known cases to date are also from Anatolia, Syria, and single samples have been reported with origins in Southern Russia and Southern France.

I belong to haplogroup J2a3. My family is from Central America. Is that bizarre?

are you sure you are P279+? Its a very rare subclade. Maybe you are referencing another Y-DNA tree, like ISOGG rather than the one currently in use at Family Tree DNA. The pace of changes in the Y-DNA tree combined with multiple "trees" being referenced causes alot of confusion. Always a good idea to reference the terminal SNP you are derived for.

Yes, I am sure. My family is from a remote part of central america and they have been isolated for quite some time. They have been there for generations, but look middle eastern compared to the indigenous populations that surround them. We are not quite sure how they arrived there, but they have a Portuguese surname (Pereira). Any thoughts?

Pereira is not an uncommon surname among Sephardi Jews.

My paternal FTDNA is J2a3. My father's family fled Portugal and settled in Colorado in the 1600s, in a valley called the San Luis Valley. They were Sephardi Jews. If you have any more information, please contact me at dezzdito@gmail.com. My father's last name was Pacheco.
